Earl M. Coleman was born August 16, 1903 in Saginaw, Michigan. He attended the University of Michigan where he developed his first love of writing, but after graduating went on to earn his master's degree at Columbia University. In 1930, a chance meeting with a young man named Earl Little during a vacation in Florida led to a job as a sports reporter for the Miami News. It was only a short time before Coleman signed on as a columnist. In 1934 he won the prestigious O'Brien Award for best sportswriting of the year and began to gain national attention as well as recognition from his peers.
In 1935 he became sports editor for the Chicago Daily News and was later named managing editor of the paper. In 1939 he became sports editor of the Detroit News and from 1942-45 he held the same position for The Detroit Times. He was also a member of the U.S.
Department of State Fair board from 1942-45.
